The Best Time for Newborn Photos: Why the First Two Weeks Matter (And What to Expect)

Posted on March 06, 2025 by Simply Bee Photography

This month marks 14 years since I first picked up my camera to capture a tiny, squishy newborn—and I’ve been hooked ever since. As a Sacramento newborn photographer, I’ve photographed hundreds of babies in their coziest habitat: home. One question I get all the time? “When’s the best time for newborn photos?” The answer is simple (but just because its the best doesn’t mean we cant get amazing photos if you are in the hospital a little longer or just life get in the way): the first two weeks. Here’s why those early days are magic—and what you can expect when you book with me!

Why the First 5-14 Days Are Perfect

After 14 years and countless sessions, I can tell you the 5-14 day window is the sweet spot for newborn photography. Here’s why:

  1. Sleepy, Dreamy Vibes
In those first two weeks, babies sleep deeply and often. That means I can gently pose them—think curled-up hands, tiny toes tucked in—without waking them. It’s pure, peaceful perfection.
  2. Tiny and Flexible
Newborns are still super pliable from their womb days. By day 14, they start stretching out and getting a bit more opinionated (hello, more energy!). Early sessions catch that curled-up, fresh-from-the-start look you’ll cherish forever.
  3. Before the Chaos
Let’s be real—those first weeks are a blur of diapers and feedings. Booking early lets me capture the calm before spit-up and sleepless nights take over. Plus, baby acne usually kicks in later, so we get that flawless newborn skin.
  4. A Milestone Worth Celebrating
Fourteen years ago, I started this journey because I believe those fleeting first days deserve to be frozen in time. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

How to Prep for Your In-Home Newborn Session

Ready to lock in your spot? Here’s how to make it smooth and stress-free (because you’ve got enough on your plate):

  1. Keep It Cozy
Make sure your thermostat is a few degrees higher than normal—babies love warmth, and it keeps them snoozing. I’ll bring blankets, but a toasty room is key.
  2. Feed Right Before
A full belly means a happy, sleepy baby. Time your feeding so they’re content when I arrive—I’ll take it from there!
  3. Have a Pacifier Handy
Even if you don’t use one daily, it’s a lifesaver for soothing between shots. Trust me, 14 years of experience has taught me the tricks!
  4. Pick a Simple Outfit (Or None!)
A plain onesie or just a diaper with a swaddle(I have a ton) works best—those tiny details shine without busy patterns. I’ve got wraps and props to add a personal touch.

What to Expect When I Arrive

I’ve been doing this for 14 years, so I promise: no stress, no rush. I’ll show up at your home, ready to work around your rhythm. We’ll settle into a comfy spot—your nursery, living room, wherever feels right—and I’ll capture those little yawns, stretches, and snuggles. Sessions usually take 1-2 hours, but I’m flexible—babies call the shots! Expect a gallery of images that feel like your family, raw and real.
