Prepping your Home for your newborn session

How to Prep Your Home for a Cozy and Stress-Free Newborn Photoshoot

Welcoming a newborn into your family is such a special and fleeting time. Capturing those moments in the comfort of your own home makes them even more meaningful. As a photographer who specializes in in-home newborn sessions, I’ve seen firsthand how small steps can make a big difference in creating a relaxed, photo-ready space. Here are some easy tips to help you prep your home for a cozy and stress-free newborn photoshoot.

Embrace Natural Light

Lighting is everything when it comes to photography. I love working with natural light because it’s soft, warm, and creates that timeless feel in photos. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Choose rooms with large windows. These are ideal spots for photos.
  • Open all blinds and curtains. Even if it feels bright to you, more light is better for creating those dreamy images.
  • Turn off artificial lights. Mixing natural and artificial light can create unwanted color tones.

Don’t worry if your home doesn’t have floor-to-ceiling windows. I’m experienced in finding the best light and angles, even in smaller spaces.

Declutter Key Areas

You don’t need a perfectly spotless house—real life is beautiful! That said, clearing away distractions helps the focus stay on your family and baby.

  • Focus on main areas. These often include the master bedroom, nursery, and living room.
  • Tidy up nightstands and surfaces. Remove items like water bottles, phone chargers, and extra clutter.
  • Keep it simple. A clean blanket or neutral throw can go a long way in creating a polished look.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that I’m here to guide you. We can always move a few things during the session if needed.

Create a Baby-Friendly Environment

Your little one’s comfort is the most important thing, and a few thoughtful touches can make all the difference:

  • Set the thermostat to a warm temperature. Newborns are happiest when it’s cozy.
  • Have a pacifier and extra diapers nearby. These can be lifesavers during breaks.

Remember, your baby sets the pace for the session, and we’ll take plenty of breaks for feeding, snuggling, or soothing as needed.

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

One of the best things about in-home sessions is that they’re personal and real. You don’t need to worry about achieving “perfection”—your family’s love and connection are what truly shine through.

  • Wear what feels comfortable and true to you. Neutral, soft colors photograph beautifully.
  • Don’t stress about baby’s mood. Fussiness or breaks are totally normal, and I’ll work around them.
  • Trust the process. Some of the most authentic and cherished photos come from unplanned moments.
